I've been thinking about this and I have a hypothesis for why the orbs are clustering.  I'm not very far along in my probability and stochastic courses, but I think what you're seeing is a 2D graphical representation of the central limit theorem.  Basically, if you sum up a bunch of i.i.d. uniform random variables you'll get a normal distribution.

Anyone who's actually good at math care to comment
