Spatial location

Hi,
I'm working on a project wich interface is similar to the
Mæve interface (in the main page, exhibition). Basically I need to know the location and rotation from some objects manipulated by the user. I'm thinking of using accelerometers in each object to know its rotation, but I'm not sure what to do about the location. I don't want to use cameras because these can be occluded by the users or other objects, and this interface is supposed to get 3-Dimensional data from the object location, so I need a third axis for the "elevation" and that will be extremly difficult to implement with a 2D image.

Any ideas ?
Thanks
