open GL applet rendering on top of other tabs

When I load an opengl applet in a tab in Firefox on osX and then switch to another tab, the applet renders on top of the new tab. Also, when the edges of the applet are outside of the page's displayed area, the applet gets rendered on top of the browser's interface. In Safari, it doesn't render on top of another tab but when I switch back to the tab with the applet, the animation has stopped and doesn't seem to want to start up again.
I know it doesn't sound like a processing problem but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them.
