what's new?
Sep 15th , 2008, 7:48pm
hey all. i used to be a heavy processing user, back in alpha. i've dabbled a bit, on and off, since then, but i feel like the software has moved ahead by leaps and bounds and then some in the meantime. i'm digging through revisions.txt, and it's helpful for understanding changes to core/syntax, but i'd like to hear thoughts on how things have changed at a higher level. seems like 3D has come a long way -- last i was using processing heavily lights were *just* introduced. where are we at now? what's possible? who's using it to its max potential (other than robert / karsten)? what's up with GLGraphics? (just stumbled across it in revisions.) there's a slew of additional libraries now. back in my day, while walking uphill both ways to school i was marvelling at amit's new library Sonia. there are now 7(!) listed sound libs in Reference. there's also a bunch of code/environment tools (Broadcaster sounds interesting, and Shapetween...can you tell i'm also an AS coder?), and holy isht there's about 20 billion protocols implemented now. obviously the list of improvements / updates / new possibilities is too huge to list in a single thread. but i wanted to take a pulse on what the community has really been excited about as of late. FWIW, i just started a job this spring designing and building multimedia exhibits for a hands-on science center, which means the majority of the work i do lives beyond the screen. hence my reunion with processing. also, i don't really bother with the IDE anymore except for quick prototypes and syntax tests, i now use eclipse. speaking of, here's my contribution to this discussion to kick things off: http://www.rednoise.org/EclipseP5Exporter/ (when i say "my contribution" i do *not* mean i wrote it. thank dch for that. i just started using it last week and it's a lifesaver!!) looking forward to hearing what's new! cheers, -eric
