Microphone Detection

Hi, I'm a second year Digital Media student and I'm currently working on a project that requires me to detect volume levels using Processing and a microphone.

Could someone please point in the right direction for a simple method of detection that works with Windows Vista Home(x32). Not sure if my platform is relevant for this sort of thing.

I've had a trawl around the web and the Processing site/forums but cannot find anything that doesn't look overly complicated. I might have missed something simple, if so sorry. Maybe there's a tutorial or some reference code I could look at?
