Recommend Camera (OSX & Windows) ?
Feb 8th, 2008, 3:51pm

Hi all,

I'm working on a project that uses a camera to track people's movement. We're looking to find a suitable camera for the project, and ideally we'd like the flexiblity of having a cam that will run on Windows or OSX, so we're not tied down to one platform in the future.

Anyone got any suggestions or cameras. I'm at a loss whether to get a USB camera, or a DV camera with a capture card or something else.

Been doing a lot of research, but hard to find any info relating directly to processing, and I don't have enough money to make a mistake with a purchase.

Any tips, or pointers appreciated. Thanks.

For this project:

We used an Osprey capture card and a small dv camera. The upside of a capture card was zero processor impact. Plus we got a great picture to scan. The other benefit of a dv camera is that you can also film your installation or other work when your not directly using it.

So I'd recommend the dv camera route - however, the only issue here is security. If your gig doesn't have a baby sitter, then you're going to want cheaper tools.

I can't say I've had any luck trying to get a feed from any camera (even a webcam) on a mac. Even by firewire. But you want to search this topic on the forum because it does come up a lot - and you don't want to just take the word of a pc user Wink
