Word map

Hi guys,

I've been messing around with Processing to create a typography map of the UK using data from my employer's site, welovelocal.com

Let me know what you think and any amends that I could make?

Rik

Hi Rik, I like the map. Does the size and brightness of the name refer to the population of the city?

I'd love to see an interactive version of this. Geographical maps are always fun to play with.

Yeah, the brightness of the area responds to how many businesses are in there. It's interesting to note that some large cities are not as bright as you may think due to there being lots of smaller satellite towns around it.

Hopefully I'm going to make a print version of this, it would be nice to have a piece of art made in Processing! Cheesy

Just wondering, what direction would you take it to be interactive? Something like when you type in the first few letters, it lights up the corresponding places? Or something a bit different?

For geography I'd want to zoom in. And in getting closer reveal more data. If it's business based maybe looking at money flow between towns (no idea what data you have). But if there is something to connect the towns that would be the perfect thing to reveal on getting closer.

It does remind me of Ben Fry's zip code map

(which has a very good write up in his new book by the way)

I do have more data that I can get linking towns (we're a review site so I can do something with that), and I do agree that zooming would be cool too

I actually saw Ben's Zip Code map after I posted my map up. I do agree that there are some similarities but it's completely unintentional!
