Advice needed
Jan 28th, 2008, 3:29am

Hi there folks

First post here, but long time processing user. I just decided to digg into wiring, sensors, and use informations as live data for a special project.

I want to monitor
Temperature
Light power
and some other stuffs like
Motion detection (binary one)
Counter (havin someone counting spectators with a device that would iterate a variable on each press)

I thought about wiring as it doesnt seem that exotic to program and looks quite adapted to my needs and funds.

The main question is : wich sensors to use, where to order them, and possibly get them to run cable-less (ie bluetooth) ?

Any advice, experience or help welcome

be well

big up to the p55 activists !

where are you based? UK has maplin; USA has sparkfun, etc. etc.

the stuff you mention should be quite easy to do:

- temperature can be measured using a thermistor, basically looks like a resistor but changes resistance with temperature
- light level: similar
- motion detection: you might be best off using a passive infrared detector (like you find on burglar alarms). bascially they close a switch when they detect movment

etc. etc.

however, wireless is a slightly different story... you could get a bluetooth arduino, which could be separated from a computer, but still has a certain size. but to make the sensors sit alone and be wireless gets a little more complicated....

You could try the units from bluesense - they have wireless options, I'm using the wired version and it works great.

They have different units for various inputs, motor control etc.

Thanks to both of you

I'm going to check this stuff up and come back to keep discussing about it

wireless tends to be less necessary than it was originally because of the place specifications (old factory) and distance between computers and sensors

anyways there might a need for a few wireless sensors
