annoying new "feature" in Processing 013
Oct 27th, 2007, 9:08pm

I just upgraded from Processing 0125 to 0133 (on Mac OS X)
and there is a new "feature" that I find really annoying.

I am so used to quitting Processing by clicking the little red "x" button
on the top left corner of the window.

Now with version 0133, it just closes the current sketch
AND GIVES ME A NEW EMPTY SKETCH.
Of course, my brain has become hardwired to the old behaviour,
so I find myself clicking about 5 times before realizing
that it is just closing the empty sketch and MAKING A NEW ONE.

OK, I am being a real whiner, but I don't see it is an improvement
to have to go find the Processing>File>Quit menu, or hit Command-Q.

It can't be logical for this button to have the meaning
"give me a new blank sketch".  In the rest of the Mac world,
it means "close this window" and maybe "close this application",
... certainly not "open a new sketch".  It just seems backwards.

ok, rant over.  Take this as one vote against the new behaviour.
If it's the only vote.  I guess I lose.

Woohoo!  Making it a Preference makes everyone happy.

as with (nearly) everything that changes between releases, this is also covered in revisions.txt. it's the link next to the bold, red letters that say, "read me before downloading this release" on the download page. taking a minute to read that stuff is a lot better than making a post that goes on about how "annoying" something is and shouting in all caps.

from revisions.txt:

+ On Mac OS X, a blank sketch will open after the last sketch is
closed. On Windows, closing the last sketch will quit the program.
These default behaviors can be overridden in the Preferences dialog.
There is no way to have a menu bar without an open window in a
Java application, which is what's expected for Mac OS X apps.
(Java comes from the X11 world, where menu bars are inside windows)
This split behavior (with a preference to override) is our best
 attempt at a compromise.
