Jobs and studentships that might be of interest to some in the Processing community: Interdisciplinary Project on New Technologies and Collaboration Open University and Sussex University Research posts and studentships available: 1 x Research Fellow, Department of Computing, The Open University (Ref: 3972) 1 x Research Fellow, Psychology Department, University of Sussex (Ref: 846) £27,466 - £32,796, three year contracts (from 1 October 2007) 2 x PhD Studentships Department of Computing, The Open University Department of Psychology, University of Sussex Stipend of £12,600: candidates need to meet EPSRC eligibility criteria A recently funded three-year EPSRC research grant starting in October 2007 will investigate co-located collaborative activities using shareable interfaces. Novel technologies (e.g. multi-touch surfaces and tangibles) provide new ways of helping people to work together in small groups. This joint project will investigate the educational, cognitive and social benefits of new technology for different user groups and tasks. Applications are invited for two Research Fellows (RF) and two PhD students to work as a team on the project. One RF (post-doc) and one student will be located at Sussex and will work with Dr Nicola Yuill in the Psychology Department looking at the educational and social benefits of shareable interfaces for children. The other RF and student will work with Prof Yvonne Rogers, Sheep Dalton and Paul Marshall at the Open University to investigate, design and implement a range of shareable technologies for adults. Candidates for the Open University RF position should have a background in computer science and experience in developing graphical interfaces or ubiquitous computing systems and software applications. The OU PhD student will work in the area of business settings, focusing on how to facilitate group collaboration in meetings, jointly supervised by Professor James Fleck of the Open University Business School. For the RF position at Sussex, experience in conducting experiments and working with children is essential. The Sussex PhD student will work in the area of children with autism, focusing on how to encourage learning and social skills. Criminal Records Bureau checks will be required for work in schools.
