You might want to look at the NetLogo Ants model.

It looks like the ants are using an underlying grid that they stimulate when they gather food and the other ants react to this on leaving the nest. Try playing with the settings.

The grid on the net logo is fairly low resolution and I think you could do the same for yours - rather than iterating through the colony - the insects leave a footprint on the grid (use an array of ints I suppose).
