max # of quicktimes

It seems that having more than 4 quicktime instances really slows the frame rate down of the current clip playing. PLaying back a 8 second 640 x 480 quicktime encoded with sorenson 3 and at 350kbps (4 Mb clip) plays just fine suprisingly without  other quicktime instances loaded, but when I have more clips loaded, there is the lag. Is this just a limitation of the video library? I know that playing a clip at 640 x 480 is just asking for the lag, but it seems to play fine at full speed with about 3 clips loaded. Any more than that and there is the lag.
