improving on DV

Does anyone know if the resolution of digital tape information as it's laid down is greater than what you get through DV (640 * 480 is about the maximum I believe).

My original format is actually digital 8 if that makes a difference.

If so, any ideas about getting it off the tape and into the mac!

I think that DV is full TV resolution, so in the US that'd be full NTSC format, so 720 x 480, or for PAL that'd be 720 x 576 (IIRC), and the tape will almost certainly store it at that same resolution, as anythign greater is pretty much a waste for almost all applications.
