I was pointed to http://www.tdctokyo.org/awards/award05/nonmem03_e.html by a friend, wondering how the effect was created, and came up with my own intepretation of how to alter a background image to infer the presence of text.

My guess as to how it was created was a slight change in the size of the white dots where text should/shouldn't be (though others have other opinions, and without the original artwork, it's hard to decide)

So here's the applet, fairly simple, but it seems to give a reasonable result: http://www.hardcorepawn.com/cover/
