Context Free Design Grammar
May 17th, 2005, 11:39pm

Chris Coyne has defined a simple syntax for describing shapes that he calles Context Free Design Grammar (CFDG). CFDG is simple but powerful, and works much like L-systems and other string-rewriting rule systems. It's certainly no competition for Processing, but it allows you to think about recursive structures in a nice way.

My favorite image is this one: Funky Flower

- Gallery of CFDG images
- Download CFDG for Win/Mac/Unix
- Run CFDG online in a PHP-based renderer

Very interesting. I'm adding it to the list of related projects on the cover. Thanks for posting.

it could do with a postscript output. it'd be nice to be able to bring patterns into illustrator for print.

Good point. Their source code is available here: http://www.ozonehouse.com/ContextFree/download.html. Unfortunately (or not, depending on your preference) it's in C++.
