possible to listen to audio out?

Is it possible to listen to the audio output at all? The simple way around this is to jack the speaker out to the microphone port. Unfortunately my soundcard mic is knackered. I'm just wondering if there is a patch I can pull off to make my PC think the speaker output is going into the mic.

Under Windows, there is something what is called "What you hear" I think (i only know the german sys) if you select this, you can use it....

Stereo Mixer - that's the ticket. It works fine, no mushy interference from my busted mic.

I'm trying to make a slide show for a fine art night that is volume reponsive. We're thinking perhaps if there was a way to measure the beats or the sum volume delta. A slide show that will flick images based on the tunes we're putting on (they're telling me to keep it simple - a difficult request). I can test it works at home at least now.

Thanks Beachmeat.
