Java Plugin version information
Jul 20th, 2006, 11:09pm

Hey, if I remember correctly, the processing website generates some statistics on what version of Java people have.  I was wondering if there was any way to see these numbers are lately.

Thanks,

Marcello

I can't give you the processing.org stats, but I can give you the ones for my site for the last week:
Code:
1125 No Java version string
743 Java 1.1
54 Java 1.3
1863 Java 1.4
5934 Java 1.5
2 Java 1.6 beta

Most popular specific versions:
Code:
3689 Java/1.5.0_06
997 Java/1.4.2_03
738 Java 1.1

Interesting, sounds like they're on par with my stats...
Code:

1.5 6005 72%
1.4 1407 17%
1.1 771 9%
1.6 78 1%
1.3 26 0%

Although I'm not recording lack of java.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth dropping support for Java 1.1, and possibly even 1.1-1.4.  Or at least, some kind of loader that asks users to upgrade.

for visitors to processing.org:

1.1 > 0.10
1.3 > 0.01
1.4 > 0.16
1.5 > 0.73
1.6 > 0.00
1.7 > 0.00  (1.7!? we actually had someone show up with it..)

this is gonna trend much higher, because our audience is more technical. for a more generic project (zipdecode.com) and better cross section of web users:

none > 0.07
1.1 > 0.24
1.3 > 0.01
1.4 > 0.15
1.5 > 0.54
1.6 > 0.00

that's for the last week, and i'd consider it a better representation of actual stats for java. the sad thing is that the numbers for 1.1 continue to stay high enough that we'd still like to support them, though i think the "none" category seems to be shrinking, surprisingly enough.
