region filling algorithm

Does anyone know any common algorithms for region filling. I may be using the wrong phrase for the search. Im assuming region filling is for calculating the best way to divide any shaped region into more regions, except in my situation i have a bunch of images which are width varying dimensions that i want to collage like so http://www.flickr.com/photos/stabilo-boss/93136022/. Does anyone have any helpful links?
