tint()... costly on cpu cycles?

is tint() really intensive on the cpu. I notice that if i try to control it dynamically within the draw loop, it will slow my sketch down until it's hit its maximum value. for instance, if i increase the alpha of an image by any amount, the sketch will run at a noticeably slower pace until the variable for the alpha channel hits 255. is there any way for me to implement this dynamically in a sketch without the efficiency cost?

tint() is really slow with the default 2D renderer, but probably not with P3D.
