MFA in digital/new media? (Read 1771 times)
MFA in digital/new media?
Jan 12th, 2006, 8:33pm

Hi all,

I need some help to find out where to apply for MFA this autumn. I'm originally from a background in sound but since a couple of years working mainly with digital media and installations, meaning I'm leaning more towards conceptual/media art than digital design or technological research.

Since I belong to the Swedish educational system I guess they would cover tuition fees as long as the institution is within the EU. I have no idea how it would work outside the EU or overseas.

All advice greatly appreciated!

I recommend our program at UCLA. The application deadline for this year has already past, though.

I don't know the state of other European programs, but in the French-speaking world I've been working off and on the past few years with the ARI (Atelier de Recherches Interactives) in Paris, as well as the newly monikered "Immédiat" post-graduate degree in Geneva. ARI is probably the best thing we have going here in France for what you seem to be looking for. It's a combined degree with the national design school (ENSAD) and the Art Department at the (in)famous University of Paris 8 (Deleuze, Foucault, Lyotard, Negri, yada, yada, yada, ...) which has still kept its edge after all these years.

There are a lot of good people in this forum teaching/studying in Europe. Someone else should be able to add their two cents.

You might also want to check out the Royal College of Art.

Here are US grad programs I recommend my students check out, in no particular order. Also, I'm not sure at this moment which offer MA/MS/MFA/PhD. I KNOW that many, many quality programs are not listed here, so this should in no way be considered a diffinitive list.

Also, at Miami U of Ohio, where I teach, we are developing a massively interdisciplinary graduate progam in Visualization + Technology. The program will span all 5 colleges (Fine Arts, Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Business and Education,) and include disciplinary concentrations, but also common core classes. I'll post more as the program develops.

Great list, thank you Ira. I concur. That's far more responsible than simply plugging your own program. Smiley

Looking quickly at the list, I know there is Processing activity in all but a few of these programs. Teachers, please list your classes on the front page of the site! It's a do-it-yourself feature now.

Yay! Thanks all, and especially for that huge list of US institutions, Ira! A related question to studies in the states.. How do students fund their MA studies over there, for example tuition fees, residence, materials and living costs? Themselves and from their families? Student loans? Or is it easy and usual to get grants/scholarships?

Also thanks to you, Destanley, but unfortunately French isn't on my list of language skills. Any Scandinavian language, including Finnish, would work, and English of course. And I guess I could freshen up my German or Spanish over a couple of months if needed. Smiley

In general masters programs are less well funded than PhD programs (especially MS/MA's.) A typical PhD program, and some MFA's, might include full tuition and a 10-15k stipend (for a year or 2). Grad students are encouraged to look for other (usually external) funding opps. It is also expected that grad students will concentrate on their coursework/research, so seeking outside work is discouraged (but sometimes necessary.) The sad thing in the US is that many people I know, especially those with advanced degrees, are saddled with sizable student loans–often in the tens of thousands of $'s. It also doesn't help that many external funding opps. are divided too narrowly between arts or science funding, and us hybrid types can slip between the cracks.
Hopefully this isn't too discouraging. I generally think grad school is a good thing, especially if you can avoid (too much) debt.
Maybe other profs/students at specific programs can chime in regarding grad funding at their institution. At Miami for example, our MFA is fully funded, and we are hoping to at least partially fund students in our new interdisciplinary visualization + design program.
