Scripting languages instead of half-Java

Just curious...it's occurred to me that you could've used JRuby or Jython, or even Groovy, instead of building your own preprocessor, and had the "scripting" language for Processing be well-documented, more flexible, more powerful, more compact.  Did you guys consider this?  What were some of the thoughts around building a Java pre-processor?

On a side note, it'd be interesting to see someone link processing with rhino (javascript engine for java) and do a simple online processing ide.
