images in external classes

Does anybody have any idea how to program images into external classes? By external classes, I mean classes that are programmed in notepad with a .java ending and saved into a "code" folder in the sketch folder. Unfortunately I have not been able to figure out how to do this after quite a bit of tinkering around. My guess is at this point images cannot be used by external classes? Anyways any feedback would be appreciated.
