how do i know if it is run as an application (i.e. via a batch file)

i ask cause i have an applet that queries a servlet, so i need to call different urls if in authoring/browser/application modes.

is there any information that i can use (passing it through the .bat file) for knowing it is there a function that let me parse the directory path and look for a letter followed by a colon can java applets run as applications retrieve environmental info for example...
