14 August - 9 September 2003 Opening Reception 14 August 6PM ATENEO ART GALLERY Manila, Philippines The curatorial agenda for DECODE springs from the Ateneo Art Gallery's mission to provide a forum where various perspectives in contemporary Philippine visual expression can meet. The Gallery brazenly approaches this mission unmindful of the canons, pantheons or histories that commonly implicate and complicate the relationships between and among artists and their works. In DECODE, the introduction of new media in the Gallery, not only side by side, but in direct dialogue with the Gallery's permanent collection of Philippine modern art, sets the stage for an interpretive framework for an art form that is always in flux. With new media in the cradle of modern art, critical insights and connections ignite. DECODE is a boldly speculative and experimental exhibition. The works are diverse, from sculpture to software, and the exhibition space enfolds beyond the Gallery, into the Internet. Such openness and hybridism embraced in Philippine art mainstream, through the initiatives of the Ateneo Art Gallery, is indeed one giant leap in the unyielding commitment to engage distances between tradition and innovation, between human and technological complexity, between art and life media.
