electron microscope painting

Made some modifications to the flocking applet.

Click and drag to gain control of the meander object. The best results are gained from leaving the applet running for awhile (or quick strokes for the minimalist in you).

The outcome is remniscent of electron microscopy - meets - color inverse Chinese letterforms.

UPDATE-----------------------------------------

Thought I would add the initial version.  Slightly different outcome but I think it was the more successful of the two.

This is really quite enjoyable to watch. Do you plan on continuing this series?

Thank you zevan and arielm

I do hope to expand on these more and push them towards the electron microscopy angle.  I just posted a new version.

NOW WITH HAIR!!!

I really really really need to go in and clean up the code. Right now, it is really poorly constructed and there are way too many redundant variables and objects.

I'm glad you are continuing with this series. The hairy version is also excellent.

Here is a filter I wrote a while back in director. The visual intent is mildly similar. It was loosely inspired by this kind of imagery:

NOW WITH FUR!!!

(painter5 is a bit pokey but let it run for a bit)

Space bar toggles draw mode and can be used to clear screen.

Okay, these versions are actually moving in the wrong direction, but thought the effect was nice enough to post. The microscopy effect is minimized by the lack of scale.

Ended up trying it this way because of the inability to set fractional strokeWidths(?).  The hair of version 3 was getting clipped because of the drastic difference between strokeWidths of 2 and 1.  Doh.  Looks like I might have to try another way.

Zevan, that director version is quite spectacular.  Have you done anymore studies like this?  And how hard would it be to do a more literal translation of the Director version in P5?

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I did do a couple more studies -- but at the moment I don't have access to the director files. Here are some stills from them:

I don't think it would be a problem -- just a matter of me sitting down and doing it.

If you get a chance, take a look at some of these stock photos -- inspiring stuff:

painter4 really starts to look like a magnification of cloth. Nice work.

Bastard you!!!  Those screenshots merely wet my appetite.  I want to see them in luscious interactive motion.  Any chance you can get a hold of them again?

There is one of them anyway. I was in spain with no computer access for the past week or so, so please excuse the late reply.

Once I find the other one I'll post it as well.

O my god... what an amazingly cool sketch!  You know you're on to something good when people are transfixed just watching your program draw.

Very, very nice.

Cheers,
