(slightly OT) OSX USB-Serial adapters?
« on: Jun 16th, 2004, 8:09pm »

Sorry for slightly off-topic posting, but can anyone recommend a
USB-to-RS232 converter that works on an OSX Mac, and that's
cheaper than the Keyspan range? (which are twice the price of
some adapters here in the UK, but some don't seem to support
OSX...)

If anyone knows which adapters work with MacBS2
(http://www.muratnkonar.com/otherstuff/macbs2/)
for programming Basic Stamps that would be excellent.

Thanks!

i've seen several people try different serial adapters, and it seems that those keyspan one's were the only one's to work. even other keyspan models than those listed on that site wouldn't work. i know it's a bummer.

someone prove me wrong.

After poking around on the web (and the MacBS2 FAQ), it seems
that devices based on the FTDI chipset also work, although I've
not been able to try any yet.  Many of the lowcost USB-serial
devices seem to be based on these chips, and there are drivers for
openBSD and Linux as well as various MacOS and Windows flavours.

Some nice looking modules using these chips:
http://www.elexol.com/USB_Modules/ ... USBMOD1 looks
like you could maybe use it to connect a STAMP directly to USB
and forget RS232...

OK, here's a positive result:

Just bought an EasySync US232B/LC "laptop companion" USB-serial adapter direct from the company... cost me GBP 24.95 including VAT and delivery (about half the price of a Keyspan), and it works fine with MacBS2.

This device uses the FTDI chipset mentioned earlier, so it has drivers for MacOS X, OS9, Windows flavours and Linux (Linux kernels 2.40 and up have FTDI support built in).

i am using a really cheap noname adapter. its name is "USB-GMUS-03" and costs about 14 euros. you just need the prolific driver for it.
