With EDTftpj, I managed, for example, to get a name list of files in a directory on my server with this line :
 filenames=ftp.dir(".", false);
I declared filenames as String [].

My problem is when I try to use this list filenames later in the code, it works fine only before export (applet or application).
It is as if this list becomes not usable after export. I don't understand.

The problem is exactly the same if I use an another library  for ftp (for example  org.apache.commons.net.ftp.*; ).

Export to applet: no wonder, such operation needs signed jars because of security reasons. And I wouldn't do that, unless it is an anonymous FTP access: I can easily extra security information from your jar (unless you ask them to the user each time).
Export to application: no idea...

I signed all the jars ! I know this problem.
PhiLho can't I send you my sketch to you see what happens ? The code allows me to connect to my server (I'll change the password after). Then the code give me the name of the directories under IR/data/. There are 3 directories src0, scrC1 and src2. I get thoses names in a list that I can only use if no export.
Would you like to try ?

Knowing that fileNames is a String []
with inside fileNames[0]=src0, fileNames[1]=src1 and fileNames[2]=src2

I only ask in the draw() this :
text(fileNames[0],100,100);

With a simple run it works, when export applet or application filesNames[0] seems not exist.

So this means that ftp.dir() worked, so you were able to create the ftp variable: the library was found and used, but isn't able to access the server. Honestly, I have no idea if an applet can do FTP, it is quite an uncommon action...

After export the code isn't able to get asked information from server. No error message : strange because ftp works only through exception.

Yes an applet can do FTP. Look what I found :

I know now why after export my application or applet with FTP don't work :
The windows 7 FIREWALL !!!
When the firewall is disabled everything works fine.
I try to know more about this problem.

The problem seems to come from  a bug between jdk 1.7 and the windows 7 firewall.

I found a workaround on google :

execute this in cmd with rigths administrators :
netsh advfirewall set global StatefulFTP disable

I don't really understand this command but now my applet or application works fine.

1- Download the edtftpj library here :

2- under /lib of edtftpj copy edtftpj.jar and junit.jar
3- Paste thoses jar under a folder called code in your sketch folder
4-The code to connect the server and get a list of what exists under a choosen folder :

5- If java 1.7 platform install on your computer, this code will not work after export.
A workaround to make it works all the time:
execute this in cmd with rigths administrators :

 With java 1.6 no problem.

If you have address the the applet, you can easily get the jar.
Inside the jar (a simple zip file), I can extract the .class file.
In this file, the strings are just plain visible with an hex editor.
I can also use a Java decompiler and see the user name and password.
That's why I advice not to use FTP, DB connection, API connection (eg. to Twitter), etc. in an applet...
For upload, connection to DB and such, it is better to use a server-side script that does the connection and filter the sent data...

It's very important what you say.
I typed the adress of a jar file located on my server and see with horror that anyone could download it !!!!
I knew that it was easy to read a jar. But I didn't know that it was so easy to get file on a server. 
Is it possible to diseabled the downloading ?

If the users cannot download the jar, they cannot run the applet: it runs on their computer, not on the server!
Even if you disallow direct download, it will be in the Java cache, so it is still possible to get it.

I understand NOW why you say FTP is not a good thing. Such a shame. It was very handy to get data. I give up FTP.

May be a last chance to use safely ftp in processing.
I export my sketch as an application and use a software call jar2exe to make one exe. 4 jars are embeded. I choose the option Encrypt and hide class files with jar2exe.
It works fine !

I found nothing with a quick look, so indeed it is a bit safer than with regular jar. I haven't searched the Web to see if people have found ways to crack such protection... I am not much into cracking anyway.
So, you are safer, but perhaps not safe in front of a determined pirate. If there is one interested in your server...

Yes, It seems safer. I'll tell you if something wrong happens to me. Anyway, I understood that ftp must be used with precautions.
Since I saw the danger. I put many .htaccess files (within : deny from all) on my server to protect my files. Applets don't work anymore but it's safe !
