I think your experience may vary depending on what external editor you are using:-
Using Emacs, JEdit, TextMate, Vim etc, you should be used to the idea of creating a macro etc to get the currently edited script to run from the editor, otherwise your mileage may differ if you are using a different type of editor. But then why would you want to use such type of editor in the first place?

It may be in state of flux at the moment but something like the following works after a fashion on linux to run from command line.

./processing-java --sketch=/home/sid/sketchbook/IsoMesh --output=/home/sid/tmp --force --run

The weird thing is either --run or --present options appear to be required, but get flagged as an unknown option. The use of --force option is not recommended (by fry) but personally I would prefer that to be the default with no need to provide an output folder, which is only temporary for regular processing (gets stored in /tmp on linux, sometimes useful for retrieving the processed java file).

I might get round to producing a commando file (and macro) for jEdit eventually (as I have done for ruby-processing and processing.py). Regarding processing.py it is good to see that progress is being made to update to use processing-2.0, personally I am rather keener that ruby-processing gets updated too.

Thanks. I couldn't even find documentation that said what the command to launch Processing was. And I did look pretty throughly.

I have just upgraded to beta 5, and I really can't get this command line stuff working.

I have to say I miss the "external editor" option already.

Can't understand what was so confusing about it that it had to be removed. It was simple, easy, and stuff just worked.

In case it is helpful for searches or reference, here is the output of processing.java.exe (on Windows 7):

--bits Must be specified if libraries are used that are

32- or 64-bit specific such as the OpenGL library.

Otherwise specify 0 or leave it out.

I decided to just go back to beta 3

Every time I tried to run a sketch I just got this output:

I've gone back to b3 as well. Like Greger I get various kinds of errors when I try to get this working.

I think External Editor option should be returned. It's still useful if you prefer a text editor that doesn't have a Build option. And right now the command line seems either broken or not documented well enough. (It's all the same end result to me.)

I'll see if I can file this as a feature request.

The error is a known issue(1334) and has been fixed in the trunk.

"For the time being, copy ecj.jar from inside the processing download (java -> mode -> ecj.jar) to the 'lib' folder with the other files like pde.jar, and you should be all set."

I've updated the my jEdit commando file, export get it here. Make sure to copy the raw file.

the following is the macro processing.bsh I use to call commando file

new console.commando.CommandoDialog(view, null);
runCommandInConsole(view,"System","processing");

I must admit I've been using latest svn version of processing rather than beta5, and possibly you need to do as Manindra29 has suggested.

For exporting I found I needed to specify --platform=(windows/linux/macosx) and --bit=64, whereas from --help usage '=' was not reqd? Anyway commando file and macro now works for me... If jEdit community was working you could also download my latest "mode" for processing.

Manindra29: I tried the recommended fix, but that did not work on my machine running Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit for Processing 2.0b5.

For those concerned, the command-line mode DID work on the previous version, Processing 2.0b4. And external editor is available up until Processing 2.0b3.

OK, I have been using processing for I don't know how many years now.

This removing the external editor thing, blows my mind. What are they thinking? Have they even tried the processing-java version in Ubuntu?

So now, since the damn thing won't reload the sketch (even though the external editor setting is set true in the pref file), I have been reduced to re-opening the IDE, every-time I change the file in my external editor.

I am rocking Ubuntu 12.04LTS, and I get the same EXACT (i.e. lexical) output that Greger gets.

Also, I tried Manindra29's idea, and that just crashes the IDE.

Anyone find a way to get the external editor feature working again?? the CMD line stuff is cool, assuming it actually works in Ubuntu and I'm just screwing up something, but it is certianly not worth loosing my external editor.

Sorry!!! but I am running on both ubuntu and aptosid and command line works for me, however I am using latest svn version, I think there might be a bug in the 2.0b5 version, possibly not fixed by Manindras fix?

Mmm, I never used the External Editor feature, as I found it clumsy.
The way I did was to edit (sometime) in my favorite editor (SciTE) and to run it in the PDE, I used the Open icon, navigated to the sketch and opened it again. Not practical with deep sketchbook hierarchy as I have, but usable.
Unlike the Open command from the menu, it kept the current window and reloaded the files.

I just tried in 2.0b5, and, nope, no more reloading.

Some editors are able to detect a change and reload the file automatically, not the PDE. And it still has no Reload option!
That, and the fact the New icon now opens a new window instead of clearing the current one as it did previously, makes the new editor much more annoying than it was before...

The command line isn't really a replacement: sometime you have to use the Stop button after a crash because of an exception, and I doubt we can do that quickly from the command line (the kill command isn't "quick"). Idem for error highlight and such.

Yeah stop button was convenient, but doesn't always work for me. On linux and in extremis particularly when an opengl sketch crashes in a bad way, I have even resorted to CTL ALT F1 which kills the graphics and allows you to log into the console where pkill java usually works, failing that pgrep java followed by selected killing of the offending process as superuser (beats rebooting). You can then exit the console and return to the desktop environment CTL ALT F7. By the way for the skeptical here is an example of me running processing from jEdit, note the presence of console, and pause and stop button!!! Click on image to view full size.

rbrauer, the point is to run Processing from an editor, and I suppose an editor able to run a process also provides a way to stop it, so, somehow, you have a point...

OK, honestly, I use almost only Run & Stop buttons (and "reload" via the Open toolbar button), and occasionally the Format command (on user-provided code only...), so I guess the PDE can be forgotten... when the command line will work.

Perhaps it is time to move to Eclipse or another decent IDE... I use PDE out of habit, and to be in the same conditions than the people I help; And because I mostly do small programs not needing advanced debugging. But I always found the PDE editor to be mediocre, only good for typing very small code (no column editing, no drag'n'drop of code, no "go to matching brace", etc.) and never found the time to help and provide something better (I was thinking of RSyntaxArea, even if it lacks the first feature I mention, IIRC).

PhiLho: if you find the PDE editor lacking, you are a good candidate for the external editor. (if it wasn't broke). You might want to try it on 1.5.1 and see. I love NP++ as my editor (with WINE), I have years of macros and shortcuts burned into my brain.

So I have simply reverted back to 1.5.1, I will only update if they fix the editor or if I absolutely have to (i.e. android etc).

As I wrote, I discarded the external editor mode early in my usage of Processing, for some reason (I haven't tried again recently). When I use an external editor (SciTE, not so far of Notepad++, same base component: Scintilla), I used a trick to reload the sketch in the PDE. But the trick is gone, and the usage is now clumsy (closing the sketch and opening it again? Sight).

Problems appear to be solved in the recent processing-2.0b6 release.
Works for me at any event. I encourage anyone familiar with Textmate, and EMacs to publish equivalent solutions to my jEdit commando file. I reckon Philho's probably got something in the works for other editors? Probably worth updating toxis abbreviations.

I can run a Processing sketch from SciTE with the line:
command.go.*.pde=C:\Java\processing-2.0b6\processing-java.exe --sketch=$(DirPath) --output=H:/Temp/p8gOut --run --force
in the cpp.properties file (of course, the paths must be changed).
But the DirPath variable actually doesn't exist, I have to create it with Lua each time I open a file or change buffer:

I do agree that the command line-thing is a good addition. But I really really don't see why it is necessary to remove the external editor option.

At least keep it in the ini/cfg-file or something.

It works, it is easy and I haven't had that option turned off in ages!

Since it is fixed in Beta 6 I decided to give the commad-lline version another go now.

And though it is working now, to run from command line, and set it up as a macro in the editor... launching a sketch that way is awfully slow.

If using jEdit as editor it easy to setup macros (it will even record them for you) so potentially even quicker to get going than processing ide. I've posted one such macro ( to create a new sketch) on github as gist. You could easily modify it to suit your needs, currently it uses toxis shortcuts to setup the 3D sketch. Sensibly perhaps you should save the new sketch in your sketchbook folder, also remember sketch and folder name should match.

I am using Notepad++ as my editor. And I have got it working now, to execute with a macro.

But what I feel is that having to use the command line makes requirements for what (external) editor one can use, since it has to support macros or execution or something.

While having the "use external editor" option as it was opens for using any editor, no matter what features it has.

I must say that I have now changed my mind, and I kinda like running my sketches with the command line-stuff instead.

It has grown on me.

In notepad++ I have installed an extension called NppExec, and I have set it up to run when I press F6 with this command:

In case anyone is interested, I made a build settings file for Sublime Text 2, allowing you to run a processing script with the shortcut Command-B straight out of Sublime.

Just do "Tools>Build System>New Build System" and paste:

Of course you must install processing-java from Processing's Tools menu first.

EDIT:

I later started getting the error "[Decode error - output not utf-8]" from Sublime, and was able to fix it by modifying the build file to this:

"encoding": "Mac Roman"
}

but I'm not totally sure why this is necessary, or why this fix works, but I suppose I shouldn't complain because it works. Perhaps processing-java outputs to stdout in an obsolete encoding?

I submitted a bug report for this and I think the encoding issue will be fixed in the next release (post beta 6).

Trying to get this working in Sublime Text (thanks for the package dma_hanna btw!), seems like I'm almost there but the sketch doesn't seem to get passed to processing-java properly.

Here are my Processing.sublime-build settings:

I feel like I'm almost there with this.

I can get processing-java to build, but not run:

C:\example_6_6>processing-java --build --sketch=c:\example_6_6 --output=c:\example_6_6\temp --run --force

Outputs the following files/folders:

c:\example_6_6\temp
\example_6_6.class
c:\example_6_6\temp\source
\example_6_6.java

But still terminates with the error

The same command without the --run flag outputs the same files (without the error) and 'Finished' at the command line.

Exporting to a 32-bit application works too.

Yeah, I forgot:

If needed, put the full path to core.jar

I really appreciate your help on this! It's still not finding the main class (example_6_6.java is in source folder as generated by processing-java):

Apparently you changed the folder.
Launch the command where the .class is.
Or replace the first . in the -cp parameter by the path to the class file.

Yes - sorry I neglected to mention that; at one stage my .pde got deleted so I temporarily moved to c:\temp to get a layer away.

So now I know my .class is runnable, I don't get why processing-java will build it but not run it. Maybe it just needs to see the .class folder in the classpath too? Might be possible to set a system variable to the sketch directory on the fly via a script?

I'll keep trying as it's bugging the hell out of me

Yes! It was the classpath! I hate classpaths!!!

I had to run processing-java with the --output folder in the classpath.

Sublime Text has a PATH variable for build systems & once I included that it worked straight off:

Just wanted to share my updated build setting for Sublime Text 2 (on the mac). Based on what rozling contributed above.

As far as I can tell, the text encoding issue is resolved. I don't use --build because I'm not sure what it does that --run doesn't already do. I changed the output directory to be inside the sketch directory so it's easier to see the files that processing is generating, rather than leaving them in a "hidden", root directory.
