how to create a (gaussian) blur

Hi All,
I am an artist using processing to create a visual effect similar to the one below

is there any way to create blurring using processing? or must each image be created in photoshop first?
as another alternative, is there any way to blur the entire canvas? or create a dynamic blur across the canvas?
