PShape: Getting style information

Am I correct in thinking there is no way to get access to style information contained in PShape objects? Looking at PShape and PShapeSVG (links below) as a way to import data, but without access to style data that's not possible.

I realize there are good reasons why the internal data is protected, but I'm surprised that there are no get() functions. I also note that PShape contains code to describe gradients, but that it's only used internally.

Announcing: Spring Workshops in New York

This Spring I will be hosting a series of one-day independent Processing workshops in New York, starting April 21. The workshops will focus on generative form strategies (introduction and advanced), with a few more esoteric offshoots like parametric modeling for 3D printing and drawing with machines (working with plotters). I’ll be taking groups of 8-10 people to keep it intimate and allow for plenty of interaction within the group.

The plan is to put together a curriculum of some of my most useful tricks for developing and optimizing generative visual systems, packaged as a series of code scenarios that we will go through together in an informal setting. The workshops should be useful for beginners and pros alike, since they’ll be based on solving real-world scenarios with tried and tested techniques. Participants will walk away with code examples dealing with real-world challenges as well as creative strategies.

Workshops are $150 each for a 6-hour workshop, with a 10% discount for students OR a 10% discount for booking a second workshop at the same time. All the details are listed on my workshop page .

Packaging Mac Java app on Windows - chmod JavaApplicationStub annoyance

This is probably not much of an issue for most Processing users, but in my workflow I sometimes need to package a runnable application for use on MacOS. I'm on Windows, which doesn't present too much of a problem as I can just use the Mac App skeleton exported by Processing and insert my own JAR files and update the Info.plist file.

There is one recurring problem, however: The JavaApplicationStub files need to have the executable permission flag set for the app to run when copied to Mac. If not the application fails to start. This can be remedied on a Mac by using the Terminal utility to go to the "Contents/MacOS" folder of your app and execute "chmod +x *.

But while doing chmod manually is a workable hack, it gets to be a nuisance and a downright problem if no Mac is on hand to do the trick on. To aggravate the issue, the executable flag also disappears whenever these files are handled on a Windows system, say by unzipping the archive to update the JAR files.

Are there any ways to set the executable flag correctly while on a Windows system? I know the flag is maintained correctly in ZIP files, could it be set while the files are zipped?

ControlP5: Disable GUI elements?

Is there any way to temporarily disable/enable GUI elements in ControlP5?

I guess it could be achieved with tabs, but in some situations it would make sense to have the option to make controllers inactive the same way Windows grays out buttons that are inactive. Or am I missing something?

I'm also missing more convenience methods to retrieve Buttons, Sliders etc. by ID, name etc. getControllerList() works but requires post-processing and type-casting. Functions like getButton(id), getSlider(id), getAllButtons() and getAllSliders() would be very useful.

Otherwise I'd like to express my great gratitude to Andreas for building this, if you add a Donate button I'd happily send you money for a beer...

Announcing: First release of ModelBuilder library

I'm happy to announce the first public release of my new ModelBuilder library, created as part of my artist-in-residence project at MakerBot Industries and beta tested in the Interactive Parametrics workshop. The occasion for today's release is the MakerBot User Group New York, where I'll talk about the library and show off my MakerBot models.

ModelBuilder focuses on functions useful for digital fabrication purposes, such as creating meshes, centering models around origin, scaling to given dimensions, output to STL format etc. It emulates Processing's beginShape / vertex / endShape logic to build mesh geometry which can then be manipulated and transformed. The UVertexList class allows the user to build paths of vertices. Vertex lists are then fed into various UGeometry.quadStrip() functions to construct quad strip meshes, most likely eliminating the need for dozens of for loops in the process. See the online copy of the ModelBuilder JavaDoc for a more complete overview.

Coders using the library to output models for 3D printing need to be aware of face orientation (see Wikipedia: Handedness) so that face normals are generated correctly. Always check models to see if face normals are correct before attempting to 3D print them.

As always, I recommed the Open Source tool MeshLab for previewing and testing models. MeshLab will render backwards-facing faces as all black, giving an easy preview of incorrect geometry.

Hairline fonts / vector font outline library

I'm doing some work with preparing vector files for CNC cutting, and it would be useful to be able to label objects with type for easy assembly after they've been cut. Since the CNC mill uses a drill bit it's not good to use a regular font with outlines since it will have to follow the entire path of the letter and make a mess.

I was wondering if anyone worked on a hairline (i.e. single-line, no "body") font library or used something similar in the past? Would be useful for digital fabrication purposes...

Processing Workshop at Devotion, Brooklyn Oct 18/19+25/26

I will be teaching an intermediate Processing workshop at Devotion Gallery in Brooklyn in a couple of weeks. Devotion is dedicated to showing work at the intersection of art, design and technology. The purpose of the inter-media forum is to facilitate a cross-border exchange between interactive media, digital art and generative design. The 'NODE - Forum for digital Arts' emerged in 2008 from an initiative of developers and users of the programming language vvvv, which is mostly used to create artistic and creative software projects. But NODE is more than just a large-scale vvvv user meeting, the NODE - Forum for Digital Arts gathers people working across the disciplines of applied and artistic media in a week-long event.

The focus of this years NODE10 is the investigation of cultural consequences of a post-industrialised, technological society. The exhibition 'abstrakt Abstrakt' thus deepens the discourse surrounding technology and society. Participants look into the subjects through workshops and talks combined with subsequent symposiums and live performances.
