I am trying to create something similar to the following:

Obviously getting the horizontal lines is straightforward :- ), but how do I work out the edges of the circle to rejoin the lines?

Hmm.....

I have been looking at painterly rendering of images, and have come up with some image processing code but it is fairly crude (using ellipses rectangles, opacity etc).

I noticed that John Balestrieri http://2002-2010.tinrocket.com/projects/programming/strokerendering/index.html has some great examples on his site (using his own code not Processing).

To get better results obviously I would need some sort of edge detection and was wondering if anybody had any pointers.

Additionally, I wondered if there was any code or libraries that would help with the brush strokes themselves.
