Hey guys, kind of a random question here, but I have been using a Dell laptop with Windows 7 for a few months now and whenever I press the caps-lock key (or actually, any other special key like that) a pop up appears. That wouldn't bug me much if it weren't for it's abilities to eat your mouse's position. Whenever I'm typing and I accidentally or intentionally press it the place where I had my cursor is gone and it is getting extremely annoying... So basically, my question is, how do I get rid of that darn pop up that is completely useless?

P.S. I have googled around and don't really trust other peoples replies on random forums without reliable resources... I really don't want to screw up my computer, since almost all of the responses are different and have something to do with uninstalling some thing.

Thanks in advance,

never experienced that problem using win7.
what does the popup say ?
Well, it is a pop up, but not what you may be thinking. Whenever you press one of the button's I've mentioned a little pop up in the lower right hand corner of the screen appears with a "lock" on it showing caps lock is on or off and when it appears it eats your cursors position... If it helps I can post a picture of what it looks like?

It might be a Dell thing, an add-on to Win7.
That's what I've been hearing... since I have a built in keyboard on my laptop there doesn't seem to be much info on the keyboard section with all the key enabling and disabling junk... ergghhh I really hate this. Who put's in a feature that is complete and utterly useless?

Annoyed...

I suspect Phi.lho is right- Dell's usually have some kind of "helper" software. On my ~18 month old Dell is called "Quickset", although that behaves a bit differently. Try having a look through the processes that are running in the task manager. Also, have a look at the drivers/downloads page for your laptop on the Dell support site- that might have some info about it.

What laptop model is it?
Thanks for your reply, I just checked out the task manager and nothing comes up when I hit the caps lock etc. I went to the dell support site and saw QuickSet... but didn't know what to do after I found it. I've seen posts about uninstalling it but I don't know what effects that would have on my laptop. My laptop is an Inspiron N7010, or at least, that's what I think you wanted to know.

Thanks,

It will run all the time, not just when you press caps lock. As far as I know quickset just gives quick access to certain aspects of the system configuration. If you want to try disabling it, in Vista (and I assume in Win7 also) it shows up as "Quickset.exe" under the processes tab of the task manager. You can click "end process" to turn it off temporarily- it should return next time you boot.
Thanks a lot! For all of the random googles and web pages asking how to disable this function, they never said this. I'll look into creating a batch file that just stops it real quick.

Thanks again,

I understand how you feel. I felt the same way too when I was still using Windows 7.If you're going to use CAPS LOCK again try using the SHIFT key instead. Just so you can continue whatever you're working on. Goodluck!
