I'm curious about the requirement for Android 2.1. I'm using a Rogers HTC Magic, which is still running 1.5. Supposedly there will be an update soon, but nothing yet.

Is there any way to change the dependency, or am I stuck with the emulator until I get upgraded to 2.1?

We're only supporting Android 2.1 and later. After years of supporting Java 1.1, we're not going to start out this Android effort by supporting an already abandoned (by Google) version of the OS.

I just want to mention the CyanogenMod project, which releases community-built distributions of Android. Cyanogen 5.0.8 apparently brings 2.1 to Droid, Magic and Dream. I haven't tried myself though, and it could result in bricked devices. The wiki seems like a good place to start looking at.

I've tried it. The upgrade process is relatively smooth. There's a very low probability of bricking your device. It's easy enough to use a restore image to go back if there has been any trouble.

I'm running CyanogenMod on my G1 (just left the Droid on the default).
