When you add a file using [Tools > Add file] it gets added to a 'data' folder in the root of your sketch (this will be created automatically).  Accessing this from within the sketch is easy enough: most operations (loadImage, loadStrings etc.) will treat the data folder as the root folder for finding files like text files and images, so you don't need to specify a path, just the file name.  You can however specify the full path to the file if need be.  Note that the data folder is compressed into the exported jar file - not always what you want when working on a web application...

There are a couple of related, useful, but undocumented methods for getting the path to the data and sketch folders:

1. void setup() {
2.   println("data: " + dataPath(""));
3.   println("sketch root: " + sketchPath(""));
4. }

Normally you'd pass a relevant file name as an argument so that the full path to the file is returned ;)

Thank you very much for your reply. Unfortunelety I'm not going to access the xml-document myself. In the Android SDK the xml-file (that contains the GUI-design) is read during the compilation, and a static class called "R" is generated. In your code you then access resources through the R-objects static members.

Actually I was wrong when asking about the assets-folder. It's the res/layout folder I was looking for. In this folder you are supposed to place the main.xml document which contains the GUI-design.

I found that all the files are placed in a temp folder in my home dir during the compilation. There is a res/layout-folder with an main.xml within.

So my question is, where do I place my main.xml file so that it ends up in the res/layout folder and thus is used for generating the the R.java file?

To answer your question, it's the data folder, which is repackaged as the assets folder when building.

But more important, you don't do layouts with Processing for Android. It only works as a single view application that takes over the entire screen of the device.
