Vista and Serial Port

Hi,

Been playing around a bit and trying out web launched apps. http://users.adam.com.au/stefm/applet3/index.html Need to accept self signed certificate if you want to run it.

The app allows you to select a serial port to open then parses NMEA strings from a GPS that might be on that port.

Problem. When pressing the "OPEN" button, the code runs fine in XP SP3. In processing environment, as a stand alone exe and as a local applet as well as web based applet, both IE8 and Opera and Mozilla. Assuming the cert is accepted and the rxtxSerial.dll is in the path. But on Vista doesn't quite do the same thing.

The only circumstance that works in Vista is running from processing itself. Stand alone exe doesn’t work, nor does the applet. Think the problem is related to accessing serial ports. Have tried 32 bit and 64 bit modes as well as the two IE versions. Also played around putting the rxtxSerail DLL in the appropriate system directory.

There is a message that comes up in the console but don't have access to Vista machine right now.

Has anyone seen this behavior and know of a work around.

Hi,

This is the console error. The error happens on Vista in all situations other than when running from processing IDE. Works fine in Vista from processing IDE albeit a little slow to respond to updating availble serial ports in the dialogue box. Works fine in all situations I tested on XP.

Despite the rxtxSerial.dll issue detailed below it is physically placed in the system32 directory.

BTW the applett is http://users.adam.com.au/stefm/applet3/index.html here. Error happens when you press the open button.

Hi,

Just noticed someone, presumably a moderator of the forum moved this from "core libraries" topic to "integration & hardware". Apologies for getting in the wrong topic.

Thought the Serial was part of the core libraries packaged with processing.

Yes, but problems specific to a given system belongs more to Integration & Hardware, IMO. Although it is a bit arbitrary in this case, Serial is sitting half-way between software & hardware. But this is clearly not a direct issue with the library itself.
I also tend to move here topics about exported sketches (as, again, it doesn't seem to be a programming issue).

Bit more info. The only time the application runs in Vista within the processing IDE I get the message below.

WARNING: RXTX Version mismatch
Jar version = RXTX-2.2pre1
native lib Version = RXTX-2.2pre2

Despite the message the application runs. But not in stand alone exe or the applet. Both those circumstances get the previously described message.

BTW Processing Version is 1.5.1

Hi,

BTW rxtx wiki suggests this is a ToDo,so really the previous warning isn't a functional issue.

Hi All,

Well figured out a work around.

Dowloaded http://rxtx.qbang.org/wiki/index.php/Download rxtx stable release.

Copied the rxtxSerial.dll to the JRE6 binary directory.

Copied the RXTXComm.jar to the JRE6 lib ext directory.

Had another JRE 1.6.0_20 directory on my systems, tried copying the files to this first and it made no difference.

Note putting the rxtxSerial.dll in either the 64 or 32 system directory made no difference.

Everything now works on Vista. Bit of a pain it can't happen without stuffing around, least it works.

Hopefully help someone else.

Hi,

There are a couple of circumstances that work. All related to the http://rxtx.qbang.org/wiki/index.php/Download files.

For stand alone exe in either 32 or 64 bit modes just replace the above files in the processing serial directory. That way they get included in the compiled project. Seems to work. For an applet need to place the above dll into windows 64 system directory. Curious considering the above suggests its 32 bit. But seems to work.

Both files can also be placed in the JRE directories as described in the above zip with similar success.

Seems something is amiss with the serial distro in Processing for Vista, works in XP though. Might try the above mods on XP and see what gives some stage. The above files are a fair bit smaller than the Processing Distro files so assume there might be things missing?????

But it works.

Hi,

The applet generated on Vista worked on XP with the origioal Processing rxtxSerial.dll in the system 32 directory. Replace with the above dll on an XP system and the applett doesn't work.

Seems there is an issue with cross compatibility with the serial stuff.

XP generated applet from standard Processing distro works on XP. Vista generated with mods mentioend works on Vista. Vista generated applett run on XP system with origional Processing distro and origional dll in system32 works. Vista generated applet with above mod on XP system doesnt work.

Is this all somethign to do with 32 bit JRE / 64 bit JRE and the new Processing not quite compiling for the assorted systems and the serial stuff stuck between the two. One form or another it can be made to work but not quite happening.
