Hmm... seems like TWAIN is quite pain to work with... and there seem to be quite some wrappers out there, all called JTwain.

I get it working with the demo version of JTwain from asprise:  ( http://asprise.com/product/jtwain/index.php).  But it has a nag screen popping up no and then...  and i can't really put that much money in buying a licence.

Any pointers for a work around? going SANE?

I found the question interesting so I investigated a bit yesterday, but I couldn't help you.
Indeed, MMS-Computing seems to have taken down the server hosting their Twain library (all links to these pages display a 404 page), either for maintenance/temporarily or because they no longer support it. Google's cache system allowed to see some code snippet, but I saw nothing useful for you: the GUI can be hidden, but then I saw no way to start the scanning.
And, worse, if I can display the GUI (as I get it with, say, IrfanView), and get a preview, it crashes the library (generating an error code) and I can't get an image.

As you found out, there is Asprise's JTwain. There is also Morena, also commercial. And not much more, which is a bit surprising.

Thanks for looking into this, did you check th zip linked above?  It contains the mms computing library in the code folder. I uploaded the source of the library here:

I start the scanning using the Scanner class (in uk.co.mmscomputing.device.scanner) but i don't see any possibility to set the GUI there.


There is however also ScannerDevice class (which is just an interface) that has these to functions:

But i have no idea how these classes are linked... I found  a class named  TwainSource that implements ScannerDevice.  But that is as far as i got.
