Check to see what version of Java you are running on Ubuntu off hand I believe that the command is ....java -version. I could be off on this but a quick google will help with that. If you have the non sun version, which you probably do that could be your problem.

Tried this. Doesn't seem to be the fix:

I believe this is the SUN and not open version:

$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_20"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode)

$sudo update-alternatives --config java
There are 4 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java).

2. bash: ./processing: Permission denied

Most likely processing doesn't have executable permission.  Try:

1. sherwood@sherwood-ibm-laptop:~/processing/processing-1.1$ chmod u+x processing

and then try running processing again.

EDIT:  And if that doesn't work, next try

1. sherwood@sherwood-ibm-laptop:~/processing/processing-1.1$ sudo chmod u+x processing

Yeah, we've had two questions about this recently.

I'm not sure why processing isn't executable straight from the tarball.  I suppose it might be some kind of security precaution (although I'm pretty sure I remember back in the old days that tarballs came with executable scripts all the time.)

Anyway, the linux tarball really should either include an executable processing by default, or a readme telling the user what to do to make it executable.

I'm running Processing 1.2.1 in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and this worked:

 

1. sherwood@sherwood-ibm-laptop:~/processing/processing-1.1$ chmod u+x processing

and then try running processing again.

But I'm still getting an annoying pop-up every time I run it, something like:

Processing requires Java 6 from Sun (i.e the sun-java-jdk package on Ubuntu)...

 

I have Java version "1.6.0_18", so I don't get what is happening... any ideas??

please post the entire java -version output. i think you may be using the openjdk rather than sun java

check that $JAVA_HOME is set correctly

try running it with echoing on:
sh -x processing
and post the output

1. cd /home/tux/processing-1.2.1
