uber-basic question - processing 2.0 no applet support = no more java?

hello,

i barely have any programming skills (um... was okay with lingo way back in school), and am a graphic designer. was considering exploring processing. but, i saw in the 2.0 notes it says "Java Applet support is being removed" - does this mean you can no longer create a "stand alone" "app" with processing?

also, the ultimate goal was to use processing for realtime data-driven experimentation with stock market data via a brokerage API that is for java. this assumption was there would be some way to integrate the java API with processing (since, i believed it was built around java). would that now not be possible?

i am a long ways off from diving in. but, if my initial idea/direction is no longer possible with processing and an external API because of this 2.0 change, i suppose it would be better to seek out something else. sorry for the "help me with my ignorance" type question. but, even a simple yes or no to any of the above would be helpful. thank you!

Processing remains built around java and the 'export to application' option (running Processing programs on a computer) remains possible in 2.0. No more applet support refers to running Processing programs inside a webbrowser. For this purpose the 'export to java applet' option will be replaced by the 'export to processing.js' option (or rather mode). Because processing.js is a very good alternative to the (somewhat sluggish) applets inside a browser. The only downside to js is that it doesn't support regular java classes or processing libraries. However once Processing 2.0 hits, there may be an increasing number of Processing libraries made ready for js as well as android (running Processing programs on a phone). So in short, all things remain possible, but for programs in the browser there will be a shift from applet to js. Of course creating applets from 1.5.1 also remains an option.

And if you are knowledgeable, it should still be possible to create Java applets out of a sketch, eg. with the jar created by the export to application option, or via a (future) tool.

hello. thank you for the detailed and clear reply. i realize now i never understood there was a difference between an applet and app. but, amnon's words made that very clear. i see in the long term (which, is what i'll be timing for), processing would be the way to go. i'm only considering experimenting for myself, so a java application would be just fine.

and, interesting to hear that it might be possible to still take part of the java app, and convert it into an applet as a workaround, if that becomes necessary.

really good to know i am choosing the right path now, rather than half way down it and needing to double back. really appreciate both replies. thanks for taking the time.
