Twitter4J and Twitter Streaming API

Hello there,
I am new to this forum and also to these APIs

I am trying to make an application which does make use of the streaming API of twitter to search and retrieve data, however even after looking at the documentation I am a bit confused on how to get started.

Can someone help me telling me how do I use streaming API, how I do authenticate and if Twitter4J does support streaming API and searches.

Thank you for the reply, the answer was very helpful.

I have one question.

I am received streaming tweets but is it possible for me to receive old tweets using streaming api?

I am asking this because the search api returns only popular tweets and I would like to use streaming api to retrieve all the tweets filtered by a keyword and from a specific date etc.

is it possible to do so in streaming api?

Just checked some documentation and it seems that streaming api only retrieves tweets when is activated.
The only way to retrive old tweets is to use search api, unfortunately in this case you can't get tweets older then 7 days and just a maximum of 1500 tweets
