Hello all.

I read an article that true random is generated through atmospheric noise, and like many people, I don't think that pseudo-random, or the random generated by the computer, will be sufficient.

My question is: Is it possible to use the computer's microphone, if it has one, to generate a semi to true random integer or floating point number?

I don't see how that would achieve randomness beyond the random() function. If you yelled then you would be affecting the "randomness".

The random() function is a good random number generator. Over many, many uses it produces an even distribution of numbers within whatever range was given as the argument. This is generally considered to be highly desirable in a random number generator and the numbers it produces do not seem to follow a pattern that is easily discernible.

It's just that I know the way this algorithm works. Ingenious, really.

The random function takes a seed, squares it, then takes the middle 3 numbers from the result, and the repeats. However, if you watch this on a very large scale drawing, this function will start to repeat itself. In fact, the random doesn't seem so random anymore, if the range is small. Or maybe it's just me.

That's why I wanted to search for a more random algorithm.

Is there a way to make random more random. Or am I doing something that lacks reason...

For serious secure cryptography generation, a pseudo computer generated number is indeed not enough!
But that can be amended using external data, like a recorded sound of a waterfall for example!

You can use the setSeed() method from class Random to set a "seed" based on your external sources.
