Looks very cool, but the link to the sketch isn't there. Please add it, I'd like to have a look and play around with it. Results will be posted here of course :). 

Have you tried integration with the way GLGraphics lets the GPU do particle simulation? Because it looks to me like it would be a natural fit.

Sketch link fixed - thanks for catching that.  Yeah, GPU particles might work nicely, assuming I can access the data structures of all the neighboring particles...
