Sorting colors in brightest and the pretty-est.

Hey hey

Im going to use a web cam to record video and divide the feed into 16 "pixels"

And then I want to get the brightest and most dominating color, in each "pixel" and send the color out to an individual RGB Led to shine,,, like a mirror, or a screen.

But just heavily pixelated (16 pixels, 4x4).

The thing I need help with is how to sort OUT the boring colors, like brown and black and such.

How can I add a value so it will only pick the clearest color?

Do you mean that you're splitting the image into 4x4 groups of pixels and want to find a particular type of colour found in those 16 pixels?

I expect that there are many ways of picking such a colour:

- add up the RGB values of each pixel and choose the one with the highest total (whitest), or total closest to some value

- find the colour in the group that has the biggest difference between the red and blue components (to filter out greys)

- "clearest" might be harder to pin down with an algorithm, but it might approximate to largest green component

This sounds fun; I can see a wasted afternoon ahead!

Thanx for the response!

But yeah, it looks like this, the webcam is in the middle, and the boxes each contain RGB LED.

I am gonna use an TLC5940 and an Arduino for the control of the LEDs, and all I need is to get the best way to analyze and code the colors to send up to the LEDs.

So basically yeah,,, to filter out the grays... and set the bar a bit high if possible for brightness as well.

If you want better control over the colors so the brightest and most saturated remain, then it's a good idea to use the HSB colorMode and methods.

One way to find the biggest, smallest, furthest, nearest is as in the following snippet:

you need an array of things

a minSoFar or maxSoFar

a counter

• to find the nearest or smallest, set minSoFar to a value much larger than you can possibly find with your comparisons - if you were trying to find the nearest ball to the current ball, the furthest two balls could be apart would be the diagonal of the stage, so you'd set minSoFar to at least the length of the diagonal

• to find the furthest or biggest, as in your example, set maxSoFar to less than the smallest value you can find. 0 (zero) is fine here

set the counter to -1 - I'll explain why in a mo

your array is of colours

in a for loop, check each item in the array in turn to see if it's value is more than minSoFar

if it is, make minSoFar equal to that value and the counter equal to the array index of the current item

int counter = -1;
for(int i = 0; i < sixteenColours.length; i++)

If the counter now prints out as -1, something has gone wrong!

And, as amnon.owed said, do look up Color and Pixels.
