Okay, I wrestled try to recreate the bug. No luck. I think it was a second level bug caused by the offsets getting trashed by an earlier bug that I missed. Maybe?

Better behaved but the menubar's height at the top needs to be subtracted from the display size, as the last two lines are outside the viewing area and scolling comes up short.

Just wanted to say, I'm finding this tool indispensable. As a result of having the outline I can better organize the logic by adding more tabs. This allows me to localize related logic in a more meaningful way, making finding things easier.

I was clear. The find function on the outline would be equivalent to a mouse click on the outline entry, and place the cursor in the definition line in source in the edit window.

My previous post came off a bit rude. I meant to say I was unclear, not I was clear. Sorry for the confusion any the bad impression.

i did some more tests, and it's not related to tab numbers,

I've fixed the bug and you can test out the updated version here. The user is now notified that the sketch is in Basic mode and the tool doesn't support Basic mode. Please try it out and let me know if things are improved. I've not been able to test it on a mac yet.

I've now tested it on a mac on Processing 1.5.1.

Many of the bugs you mentioned have been fixed like window not opening again, closing Outline closes the editor, including a major bug fix that was causing  the event queue exceptions while updating the tree from a separate thread. All swing controls are now updated in a thread safe manner using SwingWorker class and things work fine.

Try out the latest build here.

And regarding the compiler error free sketches causing problems, I'll need some more specifics. Please check your private messages.

Yeah, there was a minor bug and "int((" expressions were not getting detected correctly. I've patched it. I'd also been working on the alphabetical sort feature and it's now implemented in the latest build. Will consider the find feature in future versions.

I'm having problem with lowercase "č" characters in comments. I get the error and the window doesn't show up. If I change the letter everything works fine. If I then change it back to "č", close Sketch Outline window and reopen it, it also works.

umh... I am not too familiar with your tool although it's great....

Some ideas:

1st
Let's assume we had a non OOP program with a lot of functions: I think I would appreciate a tool to display a diagram of the dependencies of the functions of the program. So on the left side setup() draw() mousePressed() etc. are displayed as boxes and then to the right the functions that are called by them all connected with lines.
This tree would thus show dependencies of the functions.
When you mouse hover maybe the function is shown in a extra box (scrollable).
When you click it, you jump to the Code.

Parallel: Show dependencies in a tree of objects / classes in OOP programs.

2nd
Also a check which vars / methods / functions are not in use.

3rd

Then of course, if you hover over a method name "ball.display();" and you right click on "display" there's a local menu with a point being "jump to method". For a var or object or function: "jump to definition". You click it and go to source.

6th autocompletion
When you type an objects name you got autocompletion. ba -> ball.
When you type an objects name and the dot, like "ball." : it shows you methods and properties to select: ball.x and ball.display() etc.

Just some ideas from Word VBA etc.

Yes, this would be an enormously useful tool.   This is something we looked into last summer when we investigated rebuilding the PDE using eclipse.  Eclipse compiles your code in the background, reports on errors in real-time, as well as offers suggestions for correction.    In my opinion, r eplacing the entire PDE with Eclipse was too ambitious  and overly complex.  However, if we can work on smaller tools that push us in that direction that would be wonderful.  Please consider including ideas in this regard with your GSOC proposal!

My experience is that (me and others) suffer more often from syntax errors than from `logical' errors. In fact, the most common and irritating problem seems to be when after a series of small changes the code fails to compile with the error message pointing to an seemingly arbitrary line. Then one has to go through all the recent changes hunting for missing brackets, semicolons etc.

Of course the best solution would be a better identification of where error occur. But a background process that could tell me in real-time when a syntax error is added to the code would already be very useful.
