Screen size in inch/cm

I'm trying to develop my first android app, it's a simply game. In this game there are fields, which on each smartphone should have the same size. But is this possible? I mean, they all have different screen sizes and different pixel sizes, haven't they? So I should know how big a pixel is, in inch/cm. Is it possible to get this?

look at xdpi and ydpi

Ok thanks that's what I searched :-) But now I have antother problem, I don't know how to implement this in my code.

 DisplayMetrics metrics = new DisplayMetrics();
 getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay().getMetrics(metrics);

When I put this at the beginning of the programm then there is an error massage:

It looks like you're mixing "active" and "static" modes.

try this (maybe it works) =)

import android.view.WindowManager;
import android.util.DisplayMetrics;
import android.os.Bundle;
DisplayMetrics metrics;
//code like setup and draw etc.
@Override
void onCreate(Bundle bundle)
{
super.onCreate(bundle);
metrics = new DisplayMetrics();
getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay().getMetrics(metrics);
}
float getXdpi()
{
return metrics.xdpi;
}
float getYdpi()
{
return metrics.ydpi;
}
