It might be useful to write your application in OpenFrameworks. 

I don't see why it wouldn't work for a year.. I haven't tried for more than a couple days at a time though.

It shouldn't be a problem. I have had projects running for 2 weeks non-stop on Mac minis.

The problem is that laptops aren't designed to run at 100% cpu for extended periods, so when you do the cooling can't cope. It should work fine with other hardware.

The running out of memory issue caught me too. I noticed  that the thread count kept increasing with each new movie played. You need to remember to use endGL() after playing each different movie. Otherwise existing movie threads won't be killed and will chew through your memory. e.g.
