Replace/remove images without clearing background?

Forgive me if I've missed something obvious, but is it possible to remove or replace an image without clearing the whole background?

I have a background full screen image which has 'rollover' type graphics appearing triggered by serial events, but I could really do with changing the state of these without just 'building up' graphics on top of each other and clearing the whole screen.

Hopefully that makes sense?

Processing is sweet when dealing with images because all an image is a pixel array stored in a preferred format.

What I do is just take a snap before the last loop and then recall the image whenever I like.

e.g.

public int run;

void draw(){

run++;

if(recall==true && lastget!=null)image(lastget,0,0);

if (run%2==0)getlasframe();

}

void getlastframe(){

PImage last=get();

}

You can always do this during draw()

void draw(){

getlasframe();

if (lastget!=null)image(lastget,0,0);

}

what i did instead of covering the hole background with some color was to "push" the image away. i know, it's simple and not the most beautiful way but it worked for my needs.
