Recreating Sol Lewitt drawings but am having some issues

Hey everyone

I am trying to recreate Sol Lewitt drawings for an artist I am working for via Processing and am running into some problems. here are the originals:

With the Drawing Series III, I cant get the lines to draw themselves out entirely before starting a new line randomly placed on the x axis nor can I get it to reverse itself so that when it is blank again it will redraw itself.

For the other, I cannot get the diagonal lines to complete past the halfway points. I also need this to undraw itself and repeat.

I am very new to processing, but in advance thanks so much for any help you can give me!!

In the first one, you want to draw the lines slowly... in other words, across multiple frames.
The problem: You reset x every frame. Instead, you should check to see if your incrementing variable ( y) is greater than or equal to the height... and if that is the case, randomize x and reset y to be 0. That should work...

I can't help you too much with the second one...

EDIT:

Also, to make it go in the other direction: every frame, check to see if the entire screen is black... Probably with some form of pixel operation. Actually, you just need to check the bottom row... and if that is the case, then set a boolean variable to say that you are going in the opposite direction. Set the stroke value every frame based on that boolean variable.
