processing Crash on ubuntu 10.04

Dear Forum,

I have bought a new computer to have more power with Processing.

I have installed ubuntu 10.04, nvidia for my GE Gorce GT 220, java 1.6.0_22 and processing.

When i try to run a sketch, processing freeze and my ubuntu session restart !

This problem happen to somebody ?

My guess is this only occurred with an OPENGL sketch?

Possibly now you've turned on (or a least not turned off Compiz) this is interfering with OPENGL. Try turning off the 'eye-candy', and see if that improves the situation.

I have turned off compiz and now it's working, except with openGL sketch, where processing said that he can't find the library ...?

Are you using the 64 bit version of ubuntu?

I think it's only 32 bits version. (linux kernel 2.6.32-24-generic)...

That is weird, are you perhaps you are using the default Nouveau-graphics driver, this doesn't really support 3d acceleration, except by emulation (mesa driver). Perhaps you need to install the NVidia drivers?

There are two choices:

1. lag behind and use the one Ubuntu will install for you... (best if you are not a linux hacker)

2. install the latest driver from NVidia (best if you compile your own kernel etc)

unfortunately, i have installed the Nvidia Driver.

there is a NVIDIA X Server settings, with openGL settigns.

I have selected 2 parameters :

- Sync to VBLANK

- Allow Flipping

plus High Performance.

There is an other part called OpenGL/GLX information with difficult to understand parameters (frame buffer configurations)...

Thanks to phi.lho we are now in right section.

The only thing I can think, is if you had the Nouveau graphics driver installed originally, there may be some residual interfering cack that needs clearing out.

If everything is working you should actually be able to run OPENGL sketches with the compiz, I think that fix is more important for the Nouveau-mesa situation. I can run wobbly frames with a running esefera sketch, and I think you should be able to as well.

When I install the NVIDIA driver from the manufacturer (which I need to do every time I recompile the kernel) the script checks for and removes conflicts.

Hi,

I have ubuntu 10.04 and the propriety Nvidia driver and I have 3D with openGL working fine (n.b. ubuntu has a 'restricted drivers' install which in one or two clicks gets the nvidia drivers working automatically, with kernel compiling etc done for you).

I am on 64 bit, if I type

uname -a

into the terminal I get

2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:52:42 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

(Blue bit is the 32 or 64 bit indicator)

Algo, can you post what you get? You printed just your kernel version before, the 32 in it doesn't mean its 32 bit.

Also, what happens when you type in

glxgears

Your original problems from your session crashing were compiz related not Nvidia drivers related, now they are solved your error is finding the openGL library. (I also have to turn off compiz also with pressing F2 then typing : metacity --replace )

The error is saying that it can't find your library, so either its in the wrong place or you have the default 32bit openGL libarary running on a 64bit machine. You have to replace these files manually, googling finds instructions -

OK, you are running 32bit - (google " i686") but your OpenGL is working as demonstrated by the three spinning gears so at least that is working.

You'll have to search around the forum for solutions, as processing should be working out the box, even OpenGL examples, as you have openGL working and your on 32bit.

If you haven't all ready just check you have a folder in the processing libraries directory called opengl and if not, download processing again, make sure you extract all files / folders (tick 're-create directory structure') and run again.
