processing, alternative needed to pi

Hi,

i have been writing a gui interface which links to an arduino board to produce a DMX signal, however i was planning on using the raspberry pi to run the gui along with a touchscreen but after nearly completing my project and finally getting the pi to run processing it is running way to slow.

Has anyone managed to get processing running quickly on the pi?

Is it possible to run an arduino image on the pi?

is there an android device similar to the pi's price and physical size, which i can easily link to a touchscreen and an arduino?

If not it looks like i will have to re-write my whole code in python (which i've never used). :-(

Any help is greatly appreciated as i'm at a loss.

I would take a look at OLinuXino. The board come with android pre-installed on nand, have support for vga and hdmi displays and you can easily plug a external touch screen by using the UEXT port. Besides that, the specs are much better than Pi, on the high end model (EU 65) you get a A20 Cortex-A7 dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU and dual-core Mali 400 GPU, 1GB DDR3 RAM memory and 4GB NAND FLASH memory.

thanks thats really helpful, i've never come across these and it seems perfect, the only problem i have now is how do you get it to talk to the arduino board to produce the dmx signal?

all i need is to be able to send a word followed by 2 numbers, the arduino's code will then take this number and put it into the code based on the word. for example send 'channel 1 255' to the arduino.

any ideas?

Hey Josh,

Not 100% sure, but I suppose you can just write(or read) to /dev/tty to communicate with your Arduino board. When I say not 100% sure I mean the drivers may not be loaded by default on the kernel, I am not a hardcore android user, but a quick google search led me to:

I believe it would allow you to communicate with the kernel without need to root your device or compile the drivers for your kernel. Another option you could try, would be to connect the UART port on the OLinuXino straight into the Arduino. But if so, be careful with the difference in voltage. I think the OLinuXino runs on 3.3 and while most Arduino boards run o 5.
