Aahh! Use arrays! I think that might go a ways to solving your problem, as well...

I think what calsign mean is that this way the code is very hard to read/debug. I think you should isolate the problem in a simpler sketch with one square. When you got it working fine implement it in the bigger code. Or come back here  with the problem isolated. And heave a look in reference to Arrays, they are very useful.
